Groups SINGAPORE PIPE BAND (SPB)

The Singapore Pipe Band, which was originally known as the Singapore Girl Pipers, was established in 1968. Although the full time unit was dissolved in 1997, the Band re-launched itself as the Singapore Pipe Band in 1998. It has now grown in strength from an all-girl pipe band to that comprising both male and female pipers. The Band is currently under the guidance of Allan Wallace (Britain) and Kalwant Kour (Singapore).

The SPB is able to deliver a unique programme of Scottish music. With its extensive repertoire of Christmas Carols as well as Scottish, Singaporean and Asian popular tunes, the SPB never fails to enthral its audience. Another highlight of the Band is its lively presentation of Scottish Highland dancing. The SPB performs at local events like the National Day Parade, Chingay Parade as well as major state and community functions. Its well-received performance at the grand Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland attests to the standard of the Band’s performances. In addition, the Band has also won numerous awards in international Bagpipe competitions in both group as well as solo categories. Recently, it won several awards at the Jakarta Highland Gathering 2007, for both Team and Solo Piping & Drumming categories.

The SPB has an on-going training programme for those interested in learning this ancient and fascinating instrument. Its existence no doubt keeps the rich heritage of Scotland alive here and reflects the truly cosmopolitan nature of Singapore and its music scene.
